You’re not wrong on the whole... but I would put out one major difference these days - the size of the teams involved. Back in the 90s studios employee numbers would barely be in the double digits. One of those going under isn’t going to make noise the way 800 people getting shown the door at the same time does. 

Excellent points. Most of these companies are built on products that only have 3-5 year life spans in an ultra competitive market. Brand loyalty is basically non-existent among gamers, so if you aren’t producing well-reviewed games at a steady pace then your company’s days are numbered.

The nature of video companies will always be like this. The problem with them is that with the rise in popularity of gaming and investors/stakeholders, the expectation for them is to run like some S&P 500 business. Thank you, I appreciate that. I tossed away any concept of “The American Dream” and boot straps from my mind a long time ago and set them on fire. I’m under no delusions that this is a healthy or equitable way to live. But for now I just have to make the most of it.
