I'm thinking they're not getting the response that they anticipated and are trying to get more people into their userbase before charging. Getting people to pay for news when it's free and more frequently updated elsewhere is, well, insane.

I've read that InsomniaX doesn't allow for the Mac to stay awake with the lid closed in 10.6. Read the first user comment on this page:

I ended up downloading a $9.50 program to do that. It's called SleepLess and works great—it even has an option to allow you to keep it from sleeping only when plugged into AC power, so if you're on the road (and forget you have it running) it won't kill your battery.

I couldn't help but email Amazon.com's customer service about this and got the following reply back (emphasis mine):
