Sounds like he was raised by an abusive narcissist who froze him out whenever he did something wrong and he never learned to manage his emotions. I’m not excusing it, but shutting your relationship down for months points to severe emotional problems. What was he like during the cold period? Outside of the bedroom?

How long have you been with your partner? They might not have been raised in a home that taught them how to identify and communicate their needs and emotions. It might take them time to build that skill.
