I work in academia and I can say I’ve never worked in any department- regardless how small- that would be rendered nonfunctional by one person’s absense. However I feel like all these comments actually demonstrate a major problem with many workplaces. Even with small businesses you need a “hit by a bus contingency.” I

I totally agree. Like I commented, every workplace should have a “hit by a bus” plan because life is unpredictable. 

I am glad your job is rewarding but I agree with heywood. Every workplace should have a “hit by a bus” contingency for functionality. Having everything on one person is a very poor strategy. 

I 100% agree. I was forced to take medical leave and it completely changed my perspective on work.I wish people would chill and not take themselves so seriously.
