You can find much better examples than ME2, which made changes for accessibility, but at a fundamental level was building off the previous game.

Ok now, imagine if someone turned your God of War game into an isometric RPG with text only dialog trees. Change is no big deal until it’s something you enjoy. 

Not sure why you’re saying fans like it’s ironic. Yes, if the sequel to a series they’ve been waiting on for years comes out and is a fundamentally different type of game, many of them will be disappointed. That’s not new or hard to understand.
