Link’s Awakening was my first Zelda as well! It was the only one my dad found for my birthday after asking for “the Zelda game” which I’d heard was good (I’d never stumbled across the concept of multiple games in a series). This series has stumbled into similar problems for as long as I can remember. I think I recall Takaki once explaining in conference that the problem was that the moe aesthetic was usual and accepted in Japan, but the Western world didn’t get it and thought it was creepy instead.
