Having lived through a couple of thousand of them now, in answer to your first part, depends on how big it is and how much splashing there is from the bowl, in answer to the second part I did get to use the line “Did the earth move for you?”
If the epicenter is only 5K directly beneath you there is no build-up, it is instantly full-on. The slow initial waves followed by the more violent shakes are the ones centered quite a distance away. We are still waiting for our house to be repaired from lots of quakes 4 years ago.
You know what happens in a real earthquake? Not you little couch shaker, a REAL earthquake. No pause. No build-up. Just instant full-on chaos. Then trying to hang on for your life while hoping the building stays up around you.
They are not skeptics, they are deniers. If there was enough real science to support an opposing view like theirs, then they could be considered skeptics.
