If the epicenter is only 5K directly beneath you there is no build-up, it is instantly full-on. The slow initial waves followed by the more violent shakes are the ones centered quite a distance away. We are still waiting for our house to be repaired from lots of quakes 4 years ago.
You know what happens in a real earthquake? Not you little couch shaker, a REAL earthquake. No pause. No build-up. Just instant full-on chaos. Then trying to hang on for your life while hoping the building stays up around you.
