Dune Messiah works much better if you just consider it the final act of Dune. I really don't think Herbert ever wanted to have a happy ending for the first book.

This was basically me with Fellowship of the Ring. I'd never read the books (despite my mother being a huge fan) and was 100% there because I loved Peter Jackson's earlier films.
