Okay... time to show how naive I really am... how do I get the dock on the left take up the entire side of the screen? In the photo above it goes from the menu bar to the bottom... I can never get it like that, either too short or too long if too many open apps.

I find it so ironic that us humans work so hard to feel in control when 99.9% of our control is only imagined (I say 100% is imagined, but I know how internet boards hate absolutes).
