This day and age, unions are unnecessary in basically every industry I can think of. There might still be places where they could drastically improve working conditions (Wal-Mart maybe?) but those are exceptions to the rule.

That will never happen. Unions are not there to solve problems, they are there to collect dues from unsuspecting employees who vote them in and then find out it is very very difficult to get rid of them.
