Most of the SFBay area HOV lanes allow entry and exit at any point. As I understand it, this is unusual compared to other parts of the country and even Southern California.

I agree completely on the Mazda3 2.5/GT suggestion. I recently traded my old Miata (an NB) for the 2014 Mazda3 in this exact trim (keeping my ND, of course). I absolutely love driving the Mazda3, more than I really expected to.
