I’m pretty sure this engine does use a timing belt - not a chain. But they are non-interference engines so if the belt snaps it doesn’t mash its insides together.

The kid has other priorities right now - painfully evident since he has left the vehicle sitting in this condition for months. While the car has been down, he has evidently still been getting to class and work, so the vehicle is not critical to his essential functions.
