I am honestly ambivalent about McCarthy specifically, but I am not the type to be essentialist about a part modeled on a drag queen needing to be played by someone of a certain gender or gender expression. I’m not trying to be argumentative, I just think it’s a bit of a funny discussion.

It’s so funny that stuff like this doesn’t disqualify anybody from anything. That complete idiot will still be on the 50-most-influential-women-in-media list and will still be a frequent specter on cable shows and will still write long thinkpieces in Reason magazine despite revealing the depths of her ignorance.

This is such a major factor. Cecile Richards was a really amazing leader who managed to run the organization with a perfect balance of focus on the various aspects of PP, from health care to political action to community building to research to fundraising.
