I disagree. A talented author doesn’t need to explicitly state character traits, but you glean them from the work. That’s how we get who Atticus is. Her writing of his character.

I really appreciated this piece but disagree with you here — what Atticus means to the reader is their own construction but the reality and characterization is all Lee. That said, I don’t think the Atticus of Watchman is the Atticus she wanted us to meet.
