I've always gone with either just a box spring or a super cheap bed, then put the extra money into a top quality mattress. Beds are good for making a room look nice, but the mattress is what you're actually sleeping on.
I haven't yet, but I will! I'm currently on book 8 out of 9 in the Culture series, and once I finish them all I think I need to take a break and read a different author. But The Wasp Factory is definitely on my list for sometime this year.

I think I like it better when they pull up and over from the bottom hem. When they pull from the top, specifically t-shirts, I get distracted by the increased likelihood of stretching it badly and ruining the elastic around the neck.

Sometimes you gotta let a one night stand just be a one night stand and not take anything that comes after it personally. Humans are weird and don't always have rational reasons for doing things, like texting the day after a one night stand. Trying to figure it out is a recipe for madness.
