Well said, but I think we do have a genuine problem in that Muhammad himself (although he initially practiced relative tolerance for 13 years in Mecca) did practice a kind of mixture of religion and state power, and the use of war and physical violence against his enemies.

I mostly agree. The media didn't give Trump the "ignore and go away" treatment (quite the contrary), but he wouldn't have been able to get anywhere as near as far as he did if he couldn't exploit weaknesses in our institutions, culture, and democracy. Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) wrote in Culture and Anarchy that we
