The article attached makes me understand who the note was for, too. The “new” boyfriend was a confederate gun enthusiast. It was to him that she explained her actions with the note, not the father.

No, the series is self explanatory. It should be watched in order, but it is really good if you like old historical British sea battle movies. That makes it sound less good then it really is...
