Something that I think contributes a lot to this first film is the total mystification of all the characters, which keeps paying off. I am not a big action movie fan, but I've watched this one several times, and it doesn't get old.

For me, the problem with ST, since the original series, is NO sense of humor. The great Gene Coons and DC Fontana loved all that stuff (especially Coons), and it elevated the show.
