I’m not sure I agree it’s a “natural” state. In terms of natural selection, clearly “persistence” and a willingness to not look too closely at a partner’s mental state is a winning strategy for males. Our revulsion is a cultural expression, and not even a particularly long-lived one at that.

I tried for 5 years to have this discussion with my own daughter and could not get her to sit still for it, even though we had an open and warm relationship otherwise (most of the time). She was intensely uncomfortable about discussing it. In the end, I just had to slide the ideas in piecemeal. I hope they stuck.
