They're expensive because that's how people want them. They're, generally, just big shows to show off wealth ( or the appearance of wealth), status, and to gain prestige.

My husband has a list saved in his phone of the hospitals he is not, under any circumstances, allowed to let me end up at if, God forbid, there's some kind of emergency. They are exclusively all of the Catholic hospitals within an hour of our house.

Perhaps because there is a large percentage of people (not all obviously) who make weddings into a competition, and sharing the plans for your "special day" and pictures of the final event via outlets like social media only fuels this competition/need to put on a spectacle.

I once went on vacation and shared a room with an old friend who, unbeknownst to me, had become one of these massively irritating "early risers".
