In a lot of ways they stopped being bad (at least from the Lucas days) in the mid 90s when Ford improvements took hold. Also the XJ was generally more reliable than the s-type and disastrous x type. I own two 99 XJs I wrench myself and parts are not bad at all. Not sure if you know what you are talking about.

This, exactly, taller, wider, a British ford Taurus. Aluminum was a good move but lost much of the Jaguarness.

2004+ was a departure, Jag only changed the style once before in the early 80's with the XJ40 platform that continued until 2003. The x350 was an entirely new aluminum platform that was decidedly, meh.
