There are a lot of other fish that are sold as babies that grow far to big for tank life (many plecos, clown loaches, shovelnoses etc.) which is awful, but goldies get by far the worst…

It depends on the fish. It’s not cruel as long as the fish is suited to the environment and tank size. Just do your research and say no to goldfish!
