UK people: Does “liberal” mean the same thing to you as it does to us Americans? Or is it the meaning more in line w/ the earlier usage?

Same. Also, I think Bush’s presence at the same memorial *could* shut down the otherwise inevitable attacks on Obama from the right.
It’s also nice because it could *partially* insulate Obama from right-wing attacks. I’m not a fan of Bush AT ALL. But I do think the show of unity is good. And I think this will give the right less ammo to attack Obama on every single word he says (potentially).
I’m going to come out and say this is pretty dumb. Or, as it stands, the strength of the conclusions drawn is completely unmerited by the evidence.
But see here’s the deal. It’s people like you and the OP that say those things, and don’t even see how your own fixation on race is significantly perpetuating the racism issues that are going on right now.
“. . . . . I’ve often been alone with Roger Ailes in his office over the course of 15 years and I’ve never seen anything like what I’m reading about in the papers and the magazine.”
It is okay to feel this way—and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Yes, of course, if we lived in an ideal world, we shouldn’t give less of a shit about the race of these horrible people. But we don’t live in a perfect world.
Me too. And I’m bothered by the media coverage (including the headline on this site). All indications point towards the protest being incredibly peaceful. I hope, over the next day, we (and the media) become more cautious in our discussion of what happened.
Yep. I wish people were being a HELL OF A LOT more cautious with their wording about this. The police were shot by snipers after a peaceful protest. The way this is being reported makes it sound as if Black Lives Matter and/or protesters with the movement were involved with the shootings. We don’t know this yet. And…
I don’t really get the Jezebel-memoir-hate. YES there are a lot of crappy memoirs out there. But, the writing of a lot of the new wave of celebrity memoirs (Tina Fey, Mindy Kahling, etc.) is pretty similar, tone-wise, to a lot of writing on this website. I’m not sure how any of us can really justify this particular…
Anna Merlan is my hero for laughing at “Taylor” at the end of the audio recording (after he tells her to suck his dick). I’d have to practice hard to perfect this reaction to such violent misongyny. I love it.
Let’s not do this, please.
I’m a little bit confused by this piece. . . . .Is it about documented on-air sexism that we’ve seen directed towards female reporters on FOX news? Or is it about how we have a lot of evidence that Gretchen Carlson disseminates horrible opinions as news? Or that she can be kind of dumb? Or is it about how she has…
You have not understood my argument.
Folks keep confusing their own sense of sympathy/empathy (or lack thereof) with whether or not a crime has been committed, or if we should be outraged a crime has been committed, etc. etc.
Indeed. She is well known for having lots of advisors go over the actual feasibility of policy changes. She’s a careful politician who tends to offer concrete, modest proposals after having spent a lot of time thinking about how these proposals could be implemented, how they might influence other proposals (taxes),…
Bernie was asking that the party change this aspect of the platform. Hillary listened and, eventually, agreed. Probably b/c her team figured out it might actually be feasible. Doesn’t seem particularly Orwellian.
Which sounded stupid enough as a direct quote. But then the author goes on to repeat, “A single word: Audrey Hepburn.” What a moron.
I had the same question. South Africa also has something along the lines of Double Jeopardy. . . . .
I’m thinking Rick Santorum (Qualifications: Pennsylvania, Evangelical) and Jan Brewer (Qualifications: Arizona, Lady) might be in the running.
