I would appreciate hearing the opinions of WOC on this new interview with Saldana. I felt like the myriad of criticisms re: Saladana’s casting seemed very well-justified—and I still do. Reading Saldana’s statement above, I also feel like she might be justified in being hurt/angry.

I think you may be touching upon an important point—though I do not agree with the flippancy or lack of nuance present in your response. Nor do I agree with this comment (that you made below):

Deleted cause I replied to the wrong commenter!

And, folks, I did not mean this post as an anti-Islam post. I do think that that legal systems that incorporate sharia law into how they determine/prosecute rape case are bullshit. That is not the same as thinking that the religion of Islam or the vast majority of people who practice Islam should be condemned. If you

Hi PersnicketyPants—Thanks for this fantastic conversation. Commenters like you force me to re-evaluate my own ideas in a way that is intellectually stimulating. Commenters like you are what makes Jezebel so great.

I am fairly certain that the GOP will not recognize this as an act of hate. Which will only serve to compound the tragedy—I fear it will rob the LGBTQ community of ownership over this violation. It makes me sick.

You guys. Trump’s reaction to this tragedy is chilling. I have ALWAYS hesitated to call any U.S. politician “dictatorial” or a “fascist.” However, Donald Trump is a fascist. Here are some of his comments:

In U.A.E, the law states that there must be 3 or 4 male witnesses in order for an assault to be called a rape—or the attacker must confess. Otherwise, the woman could be imprisoned for sex outside of marriage. In some cases, the rapist is imprisoned too.

What?

I am so worried that, in a myopic search for causality, we will try to highlight one cause over another. In this case, I am afraid that if this is terrorism (which I think it must be), we will not also view it as a hate crime against the LGBTQ community (which I believe that it is). I fear that, if it is an act of

The last few months have been hard to watch, because I’ve been a Bernie fan for years, and I feel like he became very hypocritical about a lot of things.

This is a brilliantly written comment. You just hit every nail on the head, imo.

Six people agree with you! Well, I never.

I think your trolling is too dumb to actually be offensive to anyone.

This made me cheer internally.

YES. All of this. I cannot understand why so many adults in America have such an immature way of viewing the world. The world is incredibly complex. The range of issues up for debate is not only complex, but vast. As are the range of ways to address these issues. Voting, itself, should be quite simple: You choose the

The lives of people like this must be so small.

Yep. He was an awful, awful president. And largely solidified the union between the religious right’s platform and the GOP’s. Lincoln was one of the only truly great presidents we’ve ever had—and the “republican party” of the 19th century has nothing to do with the Republican party of Reagan (or the Republican party

As a Bernie supporter, I was disappointed by PP’s endorsement. I think I could see why he could be personally hurt by their endorsement—given that they don’t typically endorse in a democratic primary AND that he does have a very good record on women’s rights. That being said, 1) After reading about Planned
