Yeah they can be maneuvered that way. The automation can be deactivated. That deep and fast a dive is possibly unrecoverable though. You could pitch straight up too if you liked, but not for terribly long before you stalled/hammer-headed over.

The investigation will figure it out, I have no doubt of that. As to whether Chinese officials will release the truth is another matter. Obviously I have my doubts there.

But the systems are very well designed and redundant redundant. And this is a proven jet with decades of repeated use and 1000s upon 1000s of safe flights. I’d be very interested to find out what happened here, but it’s unlikely we will ever be privy to the real details.

Yeah can’t tell. An entire empennage separating seems pretty unlikely, but who knows. The only times I’ve seen that happen (in case studies) is with a mid-air.  But again, who knows.

That’d be pretty tough to do without a mid-air collision.  Wing spars are very, very strong.  But who knows.
