I think the first few episodes deal with the "higher power" issue with Pierre initially thinking it was a "good" thing from beyond, before changing his mind and deciding it was evil. In the end it was neither, but rather a "let's help them with their issue" event, which, if you work with the water sprite based idea,

I watched the first couple of minutes of the first episode on netflix. The music is substantially different, and I prefer the French version. I want to watch the rest of it eventually.

I hardly ever watch TV, but found this show absolutely worth my time. I don't understand why it's so underrated.

I think this is a pretty good observation. The cinematography is very artistically composed, so the shift from a teal tint throughout the previous 15 shows to a natural light may be a way of expressing reality versus something else.
