Same thing happened to me on my wisdom teeth. I think they give you the bare minimum so it calms you down and dazes you. Luckily I had headphones and just kept my eyes shut so I didn't even notice. But the flat out knock you out anesthesia. Yeesh. That stuff freaks me out.

I actually found the experience the opposite. I agree with you the idea that your there and your not is at least comforting as in the I am totally unaware of any change part. But the lead up to it freaks me the hell out.
