Raising the gas tax is my preferred option as well. Guess I didn't really share that before. And given the alternatives MAJOR disadvantages I don't see why the political right in the US, isn't getting behind it.

Which is why we should move to a by-the-mile road tax system. Or a flat fee, AKA tax-disks. Or we stick with the current system since it encourages people to pollute less. Granted the current system requires gas-tax increases to keep up with inflation and improving MPGs, which is probably... politically unfeasible.
