In case no one else has suggested this, try putting some Rain-X on the windshield. I had an old E34 BMW that I had to drive through a storm with no wipers, and Rain-X definitely helped.
After having a Miata (too small), I traded up to a Honda Pilot (too large). Now I have a 2-door GTI (just right).
