I am also a geologist (really) and that person’s wife is wrong. Serpentine is definitely a mineral, but that picture you posted is of a serpentine rock. ‘Rock’ is basically a bullshit term that people get uppity about. All it means is a naturally-occurring solid composed of ONE or more minerals.
