This makes the S3 a more attractive package. Smaller, more nimble, better transmission.

What a shame. I have the previous S4 with the V6 and the DSG, and I think that the transmission is one of the best parts of the car. I like that it feels different than a typical automatic. I’ve driven the same engine with the ZF 8 speed in the A6, and there’s no comparison. They’re kind of comparable on upshifts, but…
If this is based on the preference of German car shoppers, then how come we can’t get the same options as features in the cars AS the German car shoppers?
Cut to the chase Audi. Just make it a cvt already
That is pretty disappointing news. That S-Tronic gearbox was one of the highlights of the outgoing S4.
The S4 is simply a no buy now.
Something doesn't compute. Current Audi S6s and S7s both have 400+ lb ft and 7 speed dual clutch transmissions. Seems like the new engine should be well within those limits.
Ohh look a Value Engineered Car!!!
Welp, this settles it...hanging onto my 2013 6 speed manual S4 indefinitely
At least the multitronic is going away in the A4, it was awful.
Audi fan here.
Or maybe it’s a way to keep a gap on the upcoming rs4.
Why are they dropping the SC for a turbo? Is it MPG/emissions? Cost? I drove an A6 with the 3.0T (T stands for a long German word meaning “Our marketing department always wins”), and it was the most linear non-NA engine I think I’ve driven.
Yep - had a DSG in my 2006 A3 and loved the transmission. After that I vowed to never ever drive a torque converter automatic. But, previous car was a manual, current car(s - both mine and my wifes) is a manual. Wouldn’t have it any way, and maybe 0.5% of the time I say “an auto would be nice now” when in traffic
I know everyone seem to say the zf 8 speed is rather nice and what not...but, at least in my 3er, it still doesn't do it for me. the slushy feeling is still there and many times when I need get up and go, it says no biatch, slaps me in the face and tells me to shimmer down. while the gap has disappeared. alas, no more…
Same here. I was going to upgrade my ‘12 with this model. Not anymore...I’ve driven a ZF transmission. It’s great for commuting, but when you want to get sports, it’s nowhere near my DSG. I had been driving manual for 15 years prior to switching and wanted a change..I can say that now i”m getting older, I do prefer…
The S4 is officially dead to me.
And another car moves from the “potential” list to the “no” list.
If you can dual-clutch a Veyron, you can dual-clutch an S4.
“Too much torque to handle” seems to be code for “cost-savings”.
