My granny was sent to boarding school by her parents and she never got over it. She was so bitter about it, and she resented them her whole life, said they only sent her away so they could go off travelling.

Right? The only other boarding school mentioned in the series was St. Brutus’ Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys which sure seems like it was J.K. Rowling poking a bit of fun at the stereotype of how terrible boarding schools are.
Anime also lied. Japanese high schools are not populated with emo giant robot pilots, ninja schoolgirl assassins or magical girls with talking animals. They also don’t you just walk up on the roof anytime you want.
