I think that Airbus thought that the Japanese carriers (JAL and ANA) would at least buy some as prior to bankruptcy, JAL had the largest 747 fleet in the world (British Airways now has that honor) and both carriers had used the 747 for domestic flights due to large demand from the Japanese public.
The most irritating part is that with these low paid jobs, the employees usually have to go on government assistance program like welfare to make ends meet, which we all pay as taxpayers.
Okay, granted that was pretty awesome to watch but there's a reason that companies tell you "don't be a hero" when dealing with robberies. It was probably a few thousand dollars (at most), which on a personal level is a lot of money, but to a company is probably just a few hours of revenue.
