Footsteps was really good. I think it was a mistake for the author to expand the story. Penpal was a long slide downhill from Footsteps, and didn’t deliver on the promise of the original short story at all, IMO. I commented this in a thread above, before I saw you mention it, but I bought the expanded ebook version…

I’ll take this opportunity to point out that Tor also does a free short fiction collection ebook every year called “Some of the Best from Tor.com” that are uniformly excellent. I downloaded them all going back several years.
