Not at all; I honestly think that ‘assholes’ is too strong: I would, however, consider ‘asses.’ Though ‘con’ may be closer to ass (in terms of vulgarity index) and, of course, connard is far stronger than con.

I’m just glad Austria and Holland got the message and came to their senses on their election day. I was worried about both.

Haha I guess it depends how strong you find the term asshole. It’s true that connard is not as charged as enfoiré or enculé. But it’s no gentle remonstrance either. Interesting to debate! Do you feel that translators should err on the side of softness to avoid bringing negative attention to this guy?

Je suis Québécois, btw. If that matters in all this. Of my four grandparents, zero spoke English and 100% spoke French-Canadian

Truly. I came across an old email in which I was celebrating Trump’s success as the Republican nominee. I thought that it meant that it was all over for them. I am no longer counting chickens..... :(

Exactly. Now is not the time for French voters to become complacent and assume Marcon is a shoe-in for the runoff.

I totally appreciate that and agree. I’ve forgotten most of my high school French, but I’m familiar with French curse words. I think asshole is a bit of a harsh translation, especially coming in a non-casual setting. (Like, there’s a difference between calling your friend an asshole for doing something stupid as a

Dumbass, I can definitely see. Isn’t shithead still a little too strong?

I usually translate connard as dumbass or shithead.

To be entirely fair, I think that translation wouldn’t entirely be inaccurate, and really does capture the spirit of things.

Words are important.

Agreed. I don’t think I’ve followed a foreign election as closely as I’m following the French Elections. And I’m not watching passively, I’m like the person at the movies who’s screaming “OMG RUN!! NO STOP! RUN!!!!” at the character that’s about to make a big mistake.

Pedantic, I know, and apologise in advance but although “connards” does translate literally to assholes, it isn’t quite as strong or vulgar as “asshole” is in English. It isn’t as light as “idiot,” but I would posit that it is somewhere in between. “Con,” for example is literally a cunt, but it doesn’t have nearly that

The one thing that can be said for Ivanka, she knows what hand feeds her.

The will. He is a vindictive dimwitted narcissist. She is defending him because he will write her out of the will for a single act of perceived disloyalty. She’s nothing but a gold digger who has the misfortune to not be able to pick her sugar daddy.

That’s a good idea. Trump doesn’t have a tenth of Lucille’s charm but they are both racist, homophobic narcissists so that would be great to see and Trump’s relationship with Ivanka is probably just as warm as Lucille and Lindsay’s.

No, don’t paint her as a victim of parental loyalty. She is a grown woman. She knows exactly what she is doing. And that’s lining her own pockets. She is no different than her father, only in a better looking wrapping. But listen to her words, she is the same as her father. Saying anything to sell the product.

Team player or cult member? Loyal family woman or self-preservation at all costs?

I played this role when I was a child...then I grew up. It’s not the easiest habit to kick, but at some point in your life you have to start taking responsibility for yourself.

Ivanka has it in her head that she has to defend Trump no matter what, because he’s her father but she knows exactly what he is. But she’s been raised to be a good little team player so she’ll cheer him on no matter what he does.
