Yes, it's appropriation of a word, but is it really so bad to take away the old, negative connotations of it? If you're a fan and excited about something, who has the right to tell you you can't and that you're not really excited about that thing?

It's because they HAVE been asked those questions/told those things. The signs are things that they have experienced.

Why does anyone have to be a "fake" geek? If you get extremely excited about, say, the current Marvel movie universe, but don't know the comics, are you not a geek because you don't know intimate details that were only in those comics?
