I'm probably weird (well, that's trufax, no 'probably' about it), but I start with my left pinky, hand open. I touch each finger tip in turn with my thumb (all open for five) then go backwards (index to pinky) for 6-9, and then a thumbs up for ten. Or I switch to ASL counting sometimes, too.

I used to get Noxema'd when I had sunburns as a kid too! It was the best thing.
