Unfortunately, in retrospect, the “turn to batshittery” is already evident in Hyperion. If I recall correctly, the origin story of one of the characters involves basically a fantasy of revenge against a thinly veiled Ayatollah Khomeini.

I’m not sure wide audiences would appreciate the subtlety of the fantasy element, you can go through entire chapters of it and barely feel it’s a fantasy novel.

Yeah, this is why I can’t watch the new Trek movies. It just doesn’t have that ol’ Star Trek feel when I constantly want to punch Captain Kirk.
