FFVII is most probably as mechanically deep as mainline FFs get (beat only by the Tactics games), as Materia combos could get really complex, be tuned to automate several aspects of gameplay and emulate/replace aspects of other games (like weapons and armor with elemental properties and/or added effects, for instance.)
Came here to say this. Modern state of the art cargo ships can be crewed with as little as 13 people (usually it is 20+ for safety) at full capacity, working 24/7. If you remove the redundancy, you could crew it with 5 or 6.
The expansion is very, very good. Quite a bit of a challenge, too. It’s meaty and you’ll definitely get about 15h of gameplay if you try to 100% it.

The setting is anything but bland and, once you get the gist of the story, you’ll see that the robots are justified within the setting. The story is actually pretty good sci-fi, the kind you only see once in a while in gaming.

Nah, you're spot on. Unintentional repetition is either a problem with semantic repetition, as you put it, or poor textual flow. You don't fix it by changing words for synonyms, you fix it by rewriting the whole thing so you'll avoid repetition altogether.
