I assumed that this was the same reason Sam references playing in Kansas City a couple times — the Royals were consistently in the postseason back then and were thus relevant.  As a Royals fan I'm always shocked when there is any mention of them in pop culture, and it usually only happens in shows from this era.

Just watched it again the other day and I don't feel like it was cheap.  Sure, we never saw her again but the emotion felt earned.
