The thinking here (via my Libertarian father, I’m so, so sorry everyone) is that by having a presidential candidate, you’re a real party. So, you’ll gain more followers and actually win more races by having one.

I don’t love this type of meme, because in their case, they were 100% right. Like, they shouldn’t have let in immigrants if they wanted their way of life to survive. Some of it is snootiness, because the Oscars, like every award, is made-up, and depends entirely on reputation to keep up the prestige. Anything that might lessen the prestige hurts the Oscar as an award.
