You’re right, Nintendo would have no idea about this project without browsing Kotaku, and the creators of the project want it to be such a big secret that they made a ten minute video about it and posted it on a public forum to advertise it.
I mean, I couldn´t even start the game without installing a mod for it, so I would definitely say that there was nothing harsh about the criticism for it being unplayable.
