As a clown, you must have been expecting the book to be a harlequin romance. It isn't.

Yes, the novel was great - it was nominated for the National Book Award for best novel of 1980 and again in 1981 - but the 80's movie was crap. Clearly they were interested in recycling the crap rather than trying to make a great film from a great novel.
