I’ve called naval aviators a lot of things but nerds is not the first word that comes to mind! :)

Where do we get such men?

Well like you said. Can't be any worse than a Harrier. ;)

I work in a field long dominated by WOs, LDOs, and prior enlisteds. I can't say I see consistency about which is always better. Sometimes there's a difference between who can manage, lead, and command.

The Marines have always used enlisted UAV operators but is going to break down and give them “wings” and also let officers become pilots. The difference is they all will start with basic pilot training. Which makes sense because UAVs are now big and complex enough that they have to understand how to navigate the

The Aussies are trying to figure out whether they need a marinized helo to use on their new amphib. And their army pilots need to learn how to land on ships...Note looks like their army land model S70? (tail wheel all the way aft)

The 6 blade props used to leak oil a lot. It was quite a while before they solved that issue.

Yeah COD would be different I guess but they still wear cranial and float? Should’ve clarified I think it is Marine tilt/rotary wing that has that policy. And civs et al probably just get the rubber duck and a quick brief from crew chief which is probably not good enough but better than nothing I guess.

Civs don't routinely fly on mil aircraft except in HADR probably. I can't remember if it's Corps wide or happened to be MEF policy when I had to go. But definitely a lot more emphasis on people getting trained on it because of that crash. We had to watch a video where a survivor of it talked about how deep he was

Good pic shows how short they landed. This is not the fault of the aircraft.

Very similar to this mishap about 15 years ago when the pilot came in too hot. Even though boats were very close several Marines drowned. As a result policy now requires all pax who fly over water must be qualified with HABD use. The few seconds of air can make all the difference.

I see so ROK Army but not Marines. Interesting.

Do the Hae Byong Dae use them or just Army? I don’t think the ROKMC has them.

LtGen Brute Krulak said it best. “The United States does not need a Marine Corps mainly because she has a fine modern Army and a vigorous Air Force. . . . We [the Marine Corps] exist today—we flourish today—not because of whatwe know we are, or what we know we can do, but because of what the grassroots of our country

Oh like in Grenada?

The Marines provide a scalable tailored force in readiness that can be landed in any scenario across the ROMO. And it is far more agreeable in crisis response situations to land forces from amphibs, perform their mission, then LEAVE than it is to airlift in heavy Army forces, build contractor manned base camps, etc.

I knew a guy who did testing on the EFV. Had the water speed but all the transforming it had to do to go from water to land mode was pretty complicated plus it had this huge engine in the middle of the passenger compartment so couldn't carry more than a fire team. Hoping to get there some day but maybe a bridge too

South Korean Marines and Indonesian Marines use the AAV-7 just like the USMC.

E.g. After the Haiti earthquake and the airport was destroyed the MEU and HSV were the only things bringing in supplies over the beach while everyone else sat on their thumbs.
