Some people think a clip should only refer to the metal strips that some firearms use to hold bullets like the M1 Garand. As opposed to a spring loaded box type magazine. The truth is either is acceptable.

Guns and ammo stated that technically you can call a magazine a clip as well. The patent application for the Colt M1911 calls it a clip.
