If I really need to stand my phone up vertically, I use a plastic business card holder I stole from the supply closet at my work, it holds the phone up rather securely plus it has the adding feature of a $0 price tag :)

Not everyone has a WP7 or iPhone. In fact, in terms of smartphone market share there are more Android devices in use than iPhones and WP7 phones combined.

Perhaps if the EVO's kickstand had a tougher spring it would be good for holding the phone up in Portrait, but in general the kickstand is only good for holding the phone up in landscape mode.

However there is no real reason why the device can't be used horizontally or vertically to fit your preference. The screen should rotate and the content should refit itself depending on how you hold it.
