“In September 2009, after a month of whispers brought on by her dominant victory in the 800 at the world championships in Berlin, Semenya was outed as intersex and subjected to a run of leering freak-show coverage that tended to ignore the utter normality of abnormality in top-flight sports. WHAT WHAT WHAT. I had NO idea.
Yeah, didn’t know this, and it kind alters my view on the whole story.
That paragraph about vaginal inspection is absolutely alarming and this article isn’t without merit, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to disagree with the headline, which summarizes that “The Debate About Caster Semenya Isn’t About Fairness.”
What’s more unfair, being denied the right to compete because of your testosterone level or being normal women who have to compete with someone with elevated testosterone levels?
If we are going to hold two separate events for men and women, then we have to have some distinct dividing line between who is “a man” and who is “a woman.” It may not be fair to everyone, but you do have to draw a line somewhere.

Weekly, and an hour long. It’s SO hard to do a roundtable well unless you give participants time to have thorough conversations.
Yeah. It’s one of those issues I’m torn on....and as a total non-gymnast I know my opinion matters even less. It is great to see female gymnasts becoming more powerful and the newer style letting women that never could have competed before dominate. But, it also kind of annoys me that somebody can do an okay version…
While I agree with some of what you said, I think there’s a difference between expecting “perfection” and judging an artist for sex crimes. There’s also nuance there. It depends on what they were accused of and the evidence supporting or refuting it. It’s a holistic picture, that includes but isn’t necessarily…
