Perhaps you are overthinking this character? I think Matthew Weiner was very precise in creating Betty Draper. This is a woman who will never grow as a person; all those around her will change for the better, but she will remain the same.

I like to think that the last shot w/ Don looking out the window to Sonny & Cher's "I Got You, Babe" was a sly nod to Bill Murray's 1994 "Groundhog Day"...perhaps Don Draper is destined to relive all of his past mistakes...or not.

Faye was more of Don's supposed therapist than girlfriend. I found her unbearable & thought that she was a terrible romantic interest.
