I didn’t see this right away and I called Dr. Hern’s office to ask how I could donate money directly to the practice. I had a fifteen-minute conversation with Dr. Hern himself. In addition to being a hero, he is a very humble and cool guy.

Shooting gay dudes is a reaction to a perceived threat against masculinity. Toxic masculinity defines itself by who it declares less-than and worthy of domination. Homophobia is the conjoined twin of misogyny.

It’s perfectly rational. If you’re concerned about maintaining power and dominance, movements for ending both the oppression of women and the oppression of gay people present a threat to that. It’s morally wrong, but it’s rational.

Gay men are often seen by bigots as “feminized” (re: “as bad/low/pathetic as women”). IME, there tends to be a correlation - men who hate gay people also tend to hate women and vice versa.
