That was the major issue. The Hobbit is a completely different story than LOTR. If you don't capture that it's a bust whether it's one film or twelve.

I fell asleep during the first one…

Well, being African-American could hardly disqualify one from making "real" country music…it would simply be a return to its roots.

R.L Stine was okay but my 12 year old self dubbed Christopher Pike the true genius.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. I always think I'll try the comics and then the bazillion diff story lines make my eyes glaze over.

Is this possible? Sgt Fury = Nick Fury, right? The only characters I cared about in Winter Soldier were Fury and Black Widow. I've only ever heard speculation about a BW stand alone film tho, never Fury, so I assumed he was some minor minor character. I would watch this right now.

I think they thought they were being satirical (or something?) but it was so on the nose with the racist/sexist jokes that I felt oddly unsettled throughout the entire film.

I want to cry after reading this. Damn you.

I think when white folks (hipsters? vegan acolytes? foodies? whichever) started to fetishize it. Right around then.

There are a few who got it recently, like Jelinek, Pinter, and Fo, who just died.

He is not and his work is nothing like Jelinek's, so it's a very bizarre pairing. In fact, I'm not really sure what the poster's getting at it with any of the pairings, tbh.

That is…bracing to read but not surprising. A columnist in local newspaper also ignored the sexual assault to chastise women for whining about what amounts to a man being a man. After all, don't we dance to music with lewd lyrics?

Well, we got one, and we have to still beg for another (after 3 Iron Mans, 3 Thors, and 3 Captain Americas.). We're practically spoilt…

Huh. As a non-superhero comics person I find her and Nick Fury to be the most interesting out of the entire lot, save maybe Ironman. What on earth makes Captain America's character more interesting than her, film-wise?

I could have sworn the fuss over Trump's remarks was not the pedestrian "objectification of women"—I wish that's all it amounted to, tbh—but his boasts about committing sexual assault. Everyone else pointed out that, actually, no, men don't typically boast amongst themselves about forcing themselves on women in any

This is poorly done. They forgot to add the Caucasian fat suit bit to help ppl across America learn how to empathise with the overweight for Halloween.

Thanks so much for this. The NYT review seems pretty fair minded toward the series actually.

Eh? I quoted the part of your post about women. I assume Japan has a lot of em and they manage to be diverse and complex and worthy of representation in their own right, even if they're all the same skin colour. I'm not an expert in Japanese culture but I do consume some of their media: the sexist ideas are all over

"Japanese culture has had numerous strong female heroines for decades: various Ghibli movies, mangas and TV shows…"

I can't watch this without imagining Andy Lau as the main star without any of this torturous "In English" line readings almost everyone is doing, including Damon somehow. Get rid of him, keep Pascal and Dafoe.
